AIA Continental Europe Chapter Meeting Minutes
25 April 2009
The meeting was called to order Saturday, 25 April at 8:45 am at the Urbis conference center in Manchester England.
1. Welcome:
President Marc DiDomenico, AIA called the board meeting to order at 08:45. Thirty members were present, of which at least twenty four chapter members who were eligible to vote. The minimum quorum was reached.
2. Treasurer’s report:
A motion was made by Marc DiDomenico to invest 30,000 USD from the chapter’s Sun Trust account in a term deposit interest bearing, FDIC insured account for a 2-year term at 2.0%. The motion was unanimously approved.
Lorraine King, AIA, as acting UK treasurer and conference organizer, gave a report on the budget for the Manchester conference. Conference sponsors were Solatube, Lutron and Grace. The conference had a fairly good turnout with approximately 54 attendees, of them 31 were from Continental Europe. It was expected that after final expenses there would be a small surplus.
3. 2010 Board, Election:
Past-president Steven Scamihorn, AIA presented the following candidates for the respective positions for the 2010 Board as suggested by the nominating committee:
- President: Charles Croigny, AIA
- 1st Vice President, Gregg Brodarick, AIA
- Vice President: Lester P. Korzilius, AIA, RIBA
- Secretary: Vincent Marani, AIA
- Treasurer: Giuliana Barbano, Int’l. Assoc. AIA
- Eastern Europe: Thomas Bitnar, AIA
- France: Fariba Shirdel, Assoc. AIA
- Germany: Sandra Zettersten, AIA
- Italy: Marc DiDomenico, AIA
- Northern Europe: Gerry Meagher, AIA
- Southern Europe: Steven W. Miller, FAIA , RIBA
- Switzerland: Suzanne Marhefka, AIA
The above nominations were approved by unanimous vote.
Past-president Steven Scamihorn, AIA then presented Thomas Vonier, FAIA, RIBA as the AIA international director for the year 2010-2011. Tom Vonier was appointed though a majority vote by the AIACE board and will succeed Ralph Lerner of AIAHK.
4. Membership report:
Marc DiDomenico reported that AIACE is doing fairly well in terms of renewals for 2009. AIACE was at a 83% renewal compared with 84% for the same time in 2008, down only 1%. Membership renewals at AIA National were down 4% by comparison.
5. Future conferences:
Steven Miller, FAIA gave an update on the planning of the Dubai conference. A program is to be finalized within the next few weeks and will be posted on the AIACE website. AIACE members will pay a reduced entry fee to the 2-1/2 day event at 350 USD for early registration and 450 USD for late registration. The conference hotel will be the Monarch which is connected to the convention center via an air-conditioned bridge. Rooms will start at approx. 200 USD per night. Steven Miller also discussed using the conference to attract new members towards possible creation of a new Middle East/Western Asia Chapter.
Marc DiDomenico reported that a conference is still on track for Istanbul, Turkey in April 2010, as approved in Athens in 2009.
Vladimir Macura, Int’l. Assoc. AIA gave a presentation for a proposal for Belgrade, Serbia for 7-10 October 2010. The proposal illustrated a study primarily of “New Belgrade” together with special lectures by Daniel Libeskind. Suggestions for enhancement of the theme included more visits to historical sites and fewer new buildings but in more detail. It was also suggested that the Serbian Architecture Academy could join the Saturday portion of the conference to help share Libeskind’s travel expenses. The conference proposal was approved with the conditions that a budget will be approved at a future date.
Peter E. Jurmala, AIA resident of Stockholm, Sweden expressed interest in organizing a conference in Spring of 2011. The idea was received very favorably by the members present. 1st Vice President Charles Croigny offered to begin work with Peter Jurmala on developing a formal proposal.
