Netherlands: Design, financial and legal issues in renovations

Friday, 23 February 2007 — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Renovations in the Netherlands, and especially in Amsterdam, is the topic of the day.

The speakers are experts in this complex fields and we — as a group — will discuss the various financial and legal models and challenges of these projects. Participation from everyone is encouraged as the experiences of architects in other countries will be interesting to share and compare.

First, we will focus on the Rijksmuseum renovation. One of Holland’s top art collections is housed here, including many paintings by Rembrandt. This state funded museum and state funded renovation is facing many “unforeseen” complications and delays. How does management of the project affect the design and the outcome of the renovation? With the Rijksmuseum as a financial and legal case study for renovation, we will look into various models of renovating with state funding.

We are privileged to visit a private residence in the canal area, restored with private funding. In the 1960’s, many of the canal houses were renovated and many orignal details lost. Restored houses with period detail are rare exceptions.

Saturday will include a Chapter Board meeting and additional activities for attendees.
