New Architecture in Milan & Tuscany
Italy section event and chapter conference
10-11 October 2008
This, two-day event is open to members and invited guests, who wish to experience Milan and Tuscany from an architectural point of view.
The program starts with a visit to the Carosello Shopping Centre renovation in Carugate (Milano), on Friday, 10 October. We will have presentations by the project architects and engineers, and will have guided tours of the construction site.

The architect will show how the project incorporates green-roof technology and turns code-required skylights and smoke-outs into design elements. The pre-cast concrete and steel structure responds to Italy’s strict seismic requirements. The engineer will describe how these issues can be resolved and incorporated into a cohesive building design.
Following Friday’s visit, we are planning presentations and a visit on Saturday, to a new winery designed by architect Marco Casamonti of ARCHEA, located in San Casciano Val di Pesa, near Florence.
San Casciano is highly renowned for the production of wine and olive oil, whose principal cellars are home to the famous wine company Antinori. In addition, a technical tour to the brick kiln which was used for the construction phase is planned, with a presentation on masonry construction technology incorporated in the design.
The event will conclude with a brief tour of the nearby church designed by Giovanni Michelucci, San Giovanni Battista, which was built to honor the workers who had died during construction of the freeway, providing a “parish for the tourists”.
For organisational purposes and since we have limited space available, we kindly ask members to submit their registrations via email to Elizabeth Heudebourg (administration@aiaeurope.org) by no later than 3 September 2008. Please indicate whether you intend to attend Saturday’s section event dinner.
Please note that the event’s schedule is subject to modifications.
