AIA Convention Webcast

I've just watched my first webcast from the AIA Convention in San Francisco. If you care to see and learn some amazing things or simply need learning units, and find yourself having missed Manchester and the AIA Convention, you owe it to yourself to give the webcast a whirl. Not only it is free (aside from your time) but you can have refreshments in the room if you like. You can even watch with your 3-year-old on your lap. Coziest AIA seminar ever!

I have a two-screen set-up and was able to watch the speakers in full screen while watching the slides on the second. The sound quality was great through auxiliary speakers (headphones were my second choice). While the streaming image — not the slides — suffered from some minor pixelation, it was very watchable. All this with a lower-than-average speed DSL setup in our little corner of West Virginia.
—Richard Anderson, AIA

Registration is quick and easy and seminars run live through Saturday. For CET, the last seminar is a bit late but many are available for the afternoon and evening. On-demand (asynchronous) sessions will be available at a later date.

AIA board brings sustainability into CES requirement

A new requirement calls for 4 of the 18 AIA/CES hours to be related to “sustainable design” (SD), the definition of which is being determined by the AIA Continuing Education Quality Assurance Panel (CEQAP). This requirement is specified to run from 2009 through 2012, at which time, the Board will evaluate whether to extend it.

This continuing education requirement is independent of any state licensure requirements. (Texas has enacted a sustainable-design continuing education requirement in April 2008.)

The decision, taken in March by the AIA national Board of Directors, will not increase the total learning-unit requirement (18 hours, 8 of which must be on health, safety, and welfare topics).

AIA Continental Europe will ensure that continuing education programs qualify for SD learning units.

Turin event by Italy Section finalized

Italy Section Director Esteban Cruz, Assoc. AIA and Giuliana Barbano, Int’l. Assoc. AIA are pleased to present the final program for an Italy Section Event following the opening of the AIA Continental Europe exhibit in Turin. Scheduled for 16-17 June, registration by email is required by 31 May. See details in the description (PDF file, Word file). CES application work is underway in anticipation of 5 LU’s.

Turin is sometimes called “the little Paris” because it is very similar to the French capital.

The streets with well proportioned buildings, the arcades, the squares with statues in the middle, historical cafes famous for chocolate and tiny cakes, ancient bookshops, all its monuments make it a unique city.

It is situated on the western edge of the Pianura Padana, between two rivers, the Po and the Dora, and it’s a “magic” city, not only because of its esoteric tradition, but above all because it’s a city with a soul.

This cannot be described, you have to come and see it by yourself to understand, especially at sunset…

Legend identifies the Po with the Eridanus and tells that Turin was born where Phaethon fell into the Eridanus like a falling star.

His sisters, the Heliades, shed bitter tears of amber for him, and Zeus turned them into poplars and placed them along the banks of the Po, where their unfortunate brother had fallen.
