Section mailing lists

Mailing lists for sections have been reestablished. These are discussion style lists, to which all members of the list may post. Chapter members are free to subscribe to additional lists outside their section.

Chapter members without sections have been subscribed to a section when a sensible connection could be made1. Members not subscribed to a section mailing list may choose among those available2, as related to proximity, travel or focus.

1- Steven Miller of Dubai is the southern section director. Members from that area of the world are subscribed to that section.
2- The France section mailing list is by far the most active. Other section mailing lists see little to no activity.

Server migration

A misstep in a checklist for migrating aiaeurope.org to a new server resulted, this morning, in the loss of our mailing lists. The lists are being rebuilt now. That's the bad news. I had hoped to make some site changes before the migration but due to that misstep it is being done today. That, I suppose, is the good news.

—Cheers,

Richard Anderson, AIA

AIA board brings sustainability into CES requirement

A new requirement calls for 4 of the 18 AIA/CES hours to be related to “sustainable design” (SD), the definition of which is being determined by the AIA Continuing Education Quality Assurance Panel (CEQAP). This requirement is specified to run from 2009 through 2012, at which time, the Board will evaluate whether to extend it.

This continuing education requirement is independent of any state licensure requirements. (Texas has enacted a sustainable-design continuing education requirement in April 2008.)

The decision, taken in March by the AIA national Board of Directors, will not increase the total learning-unit requirement (18 hours, 8 of which must be on health, safety, and welfare topics).

AIA Continental Europe will ensure that continuing education programs qualify for SD learning units.

Membership notices

Chapter membership notices are going out very soon; please note that local dues (those not assessed through the Institute) are taking a jump in 2008. (See the board meeting minutes from London). As no space is dedicated to this increase in the dues letter, I wish to ease the shock here. See through the red by recalling this:

  1. Chapter dues have not increased for some years. (Ed. note: you would think the outgoing two-term secretary would have this information at his fingertips! Alas, he does not.)
  2. While from the US perspective the increase seems particularly onerous, the chapter is taking a bigger hit every year as the dollar slides in value to the euro. (In other words, from the chapter's perspective, dues being paid in dollars have been decreasing over the past few years. At this writing, a $100 dues payment yields less that €70 for AIACE. Ouch.)

Invitation to Brussels from Chapter President Hartnack

Karl Hartnack, AIA, 2007 Chapter President, extends his personal invitation for chapter members to attend this year’s Annual Chapter Meeting and Conference, 10-13 May in Brussels. While the UK/Design Build event in September provides some balance for this year’s nearby learning opportunities, only in Brussels will the Chapter hold its full annual meeting. High member attendance helps the Chapter establish a course for the year and beyond.

Karl notes…

This is an opportunity to:
  • experience the art and architecture of Brussels from Art Nouveau to Contemporary,
  • enjoy the food, drink and atmosphere of Brussels and Antwerp,
  • learn and earn up to 16 CES units at the most reasonable cost available,
  • exchange thoughts and experiences with your colleagues from throughout Europe and many from the US.

For further information, please see http://aiaeurope.org/events/2007/Brussels/

And download the registration form (PDF) http://aiaeurope.org/events/2007/Brussels/form.pdf

Register early to save 50 Euros.

I look forward to seeing you all in Brussels!

Year 2007 member renewals echo percentages from 2006

Mid-way through March, 146 out of 220 members of AIA Continental Europe have renewed their commitment to the chapter for 2007. Last year, the renewal rate for memberships was 64% — albeit in February. At the end of March, AIA and AIA Continental Europe member benefits are suspended. The removal of email addresses from the chapter mailing lists generated some late renewals last year; effort from the section directors and the membership committee chair also strengthened the renewal rate.—Richard Anderson, AIA, AIACE Secretary

Membership reminder

By now, you should have received a copy of your invoice for membership in the AIA and AIA Continental Europe for renewal of your membership in 2007. Note that AIA Continental Europe has no online renewal system — members renewing with AIA Continental Europe must do so by post, fax or a file attachment by email. We ask that you not send credit card information as text in the body of an email as its security can not be known.

In December, local only members of AIA Continental Europe received a dues letter with an error. The membership dues deadline was incorrectly noted as 15 December 2007 — please understand that dues were to have been paid by 15 January, now extended to 15 February. Affected members should have already received an email noting this.

AIA membership dues were to have been paid by 15 January. If you've not done so already, full AIA members can renew their membership online (direct link).

While the chapter secretary appreciates your personal notes, please note that AIA members can return to the member services page to update their membership profile.

Managing contact information

AIA membership renewal invoicing for 2007 dues begins in earnest this month. Accuracy of member contact information is an important component of the process. Unfortunately, no one-step program exists to check or correct every necessary channel of contact, thereby making assistance from members essential.

All of the following items need attention when contact information changes. (For members belonging only to AIA Continental Europe, only the second two need attention.)

  1. Change contact data with AIA National: http://www.aia.org/nav_updateprofile
  2. Change AIA Continental Europe mailing list email: http://lists.aiaeurope.org/mailman/options/AIACE/
  3. Send changes to: membership@aiaeurope.org

Notes: The system is best served if one uses the same email address for AIA National, AIA Continental Europe mailing lists and AIA Continental Europe contact data. The Chapter database email list is checked occasionally against the mailing lists but relying on any random check would result in missed communications. Members are encouraged to review their contact data at any time through the member finder.
