Urbanicity events calendar
While the AIACE web site editor confesses he is not certain how he came to be subscribed to the Urbancity.org newsletter, he does recognize that it provides an extensive listing of events which might interest Continental Europe members. In lieu of an overwhelming system of forwarding or choosing the diamonds in the rough, he instead offers a link to their events calendar search. As the name suggests, most events are related to urban issues — some of which will undoubtedly provide related educational opportunities for architects.

Meeting at Turin event details Athens 2008
Following the commitments of the 2007 Brussels Conference and Chapter Meeting, AIACE Chapter President Karl Hartnack, AIA and President-elect Steve Scamihorn, AIA organized a (not-quite-then committee) meeting to discuss the 2008 Athens Conference. Coinciding with the Turin, Italy section event, Elias Messinas, Int’l. Assoc. AIA, (Athens Conference Chair) traveled from Greece to present his plan for the 2008 Chapter Meeting and Conference.
While a quorum was not quite achieved, five Board members and the International Committee Chair attended, plus a number of chapter members.
The trip was certainly not all work and no play, thanks in no small part to the Turin event organizer Giuliana Barbano, Int’l. Assoc. AIA and our generous host of the meeting, Dante Salmè, Int’l. Assoc. AIA.

Turin event by Italy Section finalized
Italy Section Director Esteban Cruz, Assoc. AIA and Giuliana Barbano, Int’l. Assoc. AIA are pleased to present the final program for an Italy Section Event following the opening of the AIA Continental Europe exhibit in Turin. Scheduled for 16-17 June, registration by email is required by 31 May. See details in the description (PDF file, Word file). CES application work is underway in anticipation of 5 LU’s.
Turin is sometimes called “the little Paris” because it is very similar to the French capital.
The streets with well proportioned buildings, the arcades, the squares with statues in the middle, historical cafes famous for chocolate and tiny cakes, ancient bookshops, all its monuments make it a unique city.
It is situated on the western edge of the Pianura Padana, between two rivers, the Po and the Dora, and it’s a “magic” city, not only because of its esoteric tradition, but above all because it’s a city with a soul.
This cannot be described, you have to come and see it by yourself to understand, especially at sunset…
Legend identifies the Po with the Eridanus and tells that Turin was born where Phaethon fell into the Eridanus like a falling star.
His sisters, the Heliades, shed bitter tears of amber for him, and Zeus turned them into poplars and placed them along the banks of the Po, where their unfortunate brother had fallen.
—Best Regards, Giuliana Barbano, Int’l. Assoc. AIA

Brussels conference program finalized
The final program of the 10-13 May 2007 AIACE conference in Brussels provides 16 CES learning units and ample opportunity to connect with chapter members, sponsors and guests. The chapter business meeting has been moved to Sunday afternoon to enable more members to attend — AIA Continental Europe relies on member input and volunteer hours for all of its programs and activities.
Charles Croigny, AIA, the member behind the Brussels conference, is offering a special conference registration option: attend Saturday and Sunday only for €200 (members and guests alike). Sharing the same fine value as a full registration, this two-day registration is tailored to encourage attendees who look for the chance to connect with the chapter and maintain a full work week.

Invitation to Brussels from Chapter President Hartnack
Karl Hartnack, AIA, 2007 Chapter President, extends his personal invitation for chapter members to attend this year’s Annual Chapter Meeting and Conference, 10-13 May in Brussels. A subject which appears regularly in the international building press, but which remains difficult for the international architectural community to understand, is the rebuilding process of the World Trade Center in New York.
