November in Barcelona

The World Architecture Festival is the only annual international architectural event to reward excellence in a fully interactive, inclusive live format. Through its unique entry and judging process and its cutting edge seminar and exhibition content, it is simultaneously a celebration of great architecture and an inspirational intellectual challenge to a major world profession.

This year’s thematic exhibition, Less Does More, is responding to the new world economy by focusing on ways in which designers, manufacturers and constructors can add value to projects by economising on time, energy, finance and materials.

The 20th-21st centuries ideologies and technologies, the post-industrial societies, the postmodern cultures, the deconstructivist urbanism and architecture, the multi- media art and graphics, and the cybernetics, all form now the themes in which the city’s street is to be (re)considered.

The “City Street” conference invites international researchers, architects, designers (graphic, interior, media) urbanists, artists, photographers, film makers, geographers, anthropologists, philosophers, and thinkers to present full papers, posters, workshops and projects/exhibitions.

Turin event by Italy Section finalized

Italy Section Director Esteban Cruz, Assoc. AIA and Giuliana Barbano, Int’l. Assoc. AIA are pleased to present the final program for an Italy Section Event following the opening of the AIA Continental Europe exhibit in Turin. Scheduled for 16-17 June, registration by email is required by 31 May. See details in the description (PDF file, Word file). CES application work is underway in anticipation of 5 LU’s.

Turin is sometimes called “the little Paris” because it is very similar to the French capital.

The streets with well proportioned buildings, the arcades, the squares with statues in the middle, historical cafes famous for chocolate and tiny cakes, ancient bookshops, all its monuments make it a unique city.

It is situated on the western edge of the Pianura Padana, between two rivers, the Po and the Dora, and it’s a “magic” city, not only because of its esoteric tradition, but above all because it’s a city with a soul.

This cannot be described, you have to come and see it by yourself to understand, especially at sunset…

Legend identifies the Po with the Eridanus and tells that Turin was born where Phaethon fell into the Eridanus like a falling star.

His sisters, the Heliades, shed bitter tears of amber for him, and Zeus turned them into poplars and placed them along the banks of the Po, where their unfortunate brother had fallen.

—Best Regards, Giuliana Barbano, Int’l. Assoc. AIA

Brussels conference program finalized

The final program of the 10-13 May 2007 AIACE conference in Brussels provides 16 CES learning units and ample opportunity to connect with chapter members, sponsors and guests. The chapter business meeting has been moved to Sunday afternoon to enable more members to attend — AIA Continental Europe relies on member input and volunteer hours for all of its programs and activities.

Charles Croigny, AIA, the member behind the Brussels conference, is offering a special conference registration option: attend Saturday and Sunday only for €200 (members and guests alike). Sharing the same fine value as a full registration, this two-day registration is tailored to encourage attendees who look for the chance to connect with the chapter and maintain a full work week.

Invitation to Brussels from Chapter President Hartnack

Karl Hartnack, AIA, 2007 Chapter President, extends his personal invitation for chapter members to attend this year’s Annual Chapter Meeting and Conference, 10-13 May in Brussels. While the UK/Design Build event in September provides some balance for this year’s nearby learning opportunities, only in Brussels will the Chapter hold its full annual meeting. High member attendance helps the Chapter establish a course for the year and beyond.

Karl notes…

This is an opportunity to:
  • experience the art and architecture of Brussels from Art Nouveau to Contemporary,
  • enjoy the food, drink and atmosphere of Brussels and Antwerp,
  • learn and earn up to 16 CES units at the most reasonable cost available,
  • exchange thoughts and experiences with your colleagues from throughout Europe and many from the US.

France Section event spotlight on Ground Zero

A subject which appears regularly in the international building press, but which remains difficult for the international architectural community to understand, is the rebuilding process of the World Trade Center in New York.

It was agreed that this would be an ideal subject on which the AIA could collaborate with La Maison de l’Architecture (Md’A), the Paris headquarters of the professional organization of architects in the Paris Region. AIACE Members may recall that the Md’A hosted AIA Continental Europe for the opening cocktail of the November 2004 Chapter Conference in Paris. Read more→
