J. Max Bond Jr., FAIA, Dies at 73
Principal of Davis Brody Bond Aedas and 1987 AIA Whitney Young Jr. Award Recipient J. Max Bond, FAIA died February 18 in New York City. The man of whom Stanford Britt, FAIA described as?a demanding, innovative professional whose tenacity, intellect, and dedication make him a leader and servant of his community,? succumbed to cancer.
James was an unassigned member of AIA Continental Europe from 2004-2007.

At the AIA Convention in Boston, Italy section member Giancarlo Alhadeff, FAIA, was inducted into the College of Fellows at a ceremony in Boston’s Old South Church. AIACE now counts 6 Fellows within the chapter membership.
Stefan Behnisch of Germany, Jan Gehl of Denmark and Benjamin Mouton of France join him this year as Honorary Fellows within the territory of AIA Continental Europe.

AIA/CES 2008 award for excellence
Evaluations for the 2008 Continuing Education System Award for Excellence gathers 13 jurors on 12 November 2007 in Washington, DC. Eight categories in three divisions are considered:
Chapters
- AIA chapter
- Affiliate organization chapter
Firms - Architectural firm
- Level I = Fewer than 100 employees
- Level II = 100 - 250 employees
- Level III = Greater than 250 employees
CES External Stakeholder
- Educational or professional organization
- Commercial organization.

The mission of the AIA/CES Providers Program is to inspire and guide providers of continuing educational programs to consistently deliver quality lifelong learning activities for architects. The AIA/CES office will assist AIA/CES Registered Providers that demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in continuing education. DOE Solar Decathlon: Final Results
The Technische Universität Darmstadt took first place overall in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. Elsewhere within the AIA Continental Europe territory, among the 20 teams, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid placed fifth.

Batimat 2007
Paris will host the 26th Batimat, from November 5?10, when the biennial trade fair will take stock of technical evolutions, performance, and innovations in the building industry. ?Sustainable development? once again will serve as the overarching theme of the three key categories that have made huge advances: energy performance, security, and renovation. Batimat 2007 will have 2,700 exhibitors from 49 countries. The International Union of Architects presents a series of international conferences relevant to these themes within the Batimat framework. European Architecture Foundation (EURAF), is a non for profit architectural information organization. EURAF, with the technical support of Archi-Europe, promotes EU-wide professional opportunities and mobility through its web site and by organizing congresses, competitions, round tables and workshops. Focused on environmental issues in contemporary building and architecture, EURAF also organizes conferences and produces educational tools on this topic.

Brussels conference: related exhibit
On exhibit at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels is A Vision for Brussels: Imagining the Capital of Europe …
The AIA Continental Europe Conference is 10-13 May. —via Ray Spano, AIA
An international team of sixteen architects and urban designers enrolled at the Berlage Institute (Rotterdam) has been looking at [questions surrounding Brussels as a capital for Europe] since 2004. Their study has resulted in a concrete project for Brussels as a worthy capital of Europe. Starting on 16 March, this project will be presented to the public in the exhibition A Vision for Brussels - Imagining the Capital of Europe, which will be open until [17 June] at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. On 9 May, Europe Day, the Centre for Fine Arts will host an international symposium with the same title.

Chapter member leads STUDIOS Architecture work in Paris
The Luxury Goods company, Louis Vuitton, has chosen the Paris office of Studios Architecture to be the local architect for the project Fondation d’Entreprise Louis Vuitton pour la Création, to be built in the historic Jardin d’Acclimitation in the Bois de Boulogne. The Studios Paris office, led by AIACE member James Cowey, AIA, will be working with the design architect, Frank Gehry Partners to coordinate the technical studies and to lead the permitting effort. Barcelona Football Club remodeling - tenders invited
The process of upgrading the Camp Nou (FC Barcelona stadium) to a world class venue has started. During the coming months, architects from around the world will have the opportunity to submit their proposals for a profound remodeling of a stadium that will celebrate its 50th anniversary on September the 24th of this year. It is the objective of the club to reach this goal through a fair and open process.
The selection of the proposal for the remodeling of the Camp Nou will be by an international tender, organized by FC Barcelona, that will be supported by the Association of Architects of Catalunya, which will contribute the necessary expertise for selecting the architect, or team of architects, who will be commissioned to undertake the design and guidance of the project.More information and application details: www.fcbstadium.com/eng/

AIA selects 5 in Continental Europe territory as Honorary Fellows
Among 85 individuals who were selected as Fellows and Honorary Fellows of the Institute in 2007 are five honorary fellows in the territory of the Continental Europe Chapter. All were noted for promoting “the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession.”

Honorary Fellowship is bestowed on architects of esteemed character and distinguished achievements who are neither U.S. citizens nor U.S. residents and do not primarily practice architecture within the domain of the Institute.
The Fellows and Honorary Fellows will be invested on May 4 at the Alamo during the AIA National Convention in San Antonio.

Overseas chapter presidents meeting
Chapter President Karl Hartnack, AIA and President-elect Steve Scamihorn, AIA represented AIA Continental Europe at the early February AIA Grassroots Conference in Washington, DC. Chapter Secretary Richard Anderson, AIA also attended the “Overseas chapter presidents and overseas members meeting”.
The chair of the meeting, Michael Lischer, AIA (London/UK), RIBA and AIA International Director, spoke effusively about the quality and charm of the Udine Conference of October 2006.
Lischer also made particular note of the results of the 2006 AIA Overseas Member Census. (Direct links to the report and comments.) Members are encouraged to keep a close eye on the next survey, due for this spring, which will include an overseas members needs survey.

Results of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) competition have been announced.
