The meeting was called to order Sunday, 22 May at 10:45 am at the Arkitekurmuseet, Skeppsholmen (Architecture Mussem).
President Gregg Brodarick, Assoc. AIA called the board meeting to order at 10:45. Thirty-four members were present, of which at least twenty four chapter members who were eligible to vote. The minimum quorum was reached.
Gregg introduced Clark Manus FAIA, the current president of the Institute, who traveled to Stockholm to attend the conference.
Gregg reported on attending Grassroots and the AIA National Convention. It was reported that Thomas Freedman FAIA addressed the assembly and his message was that architecture should steer America in a different direction. There are three fundamental reasons to being a member of the AIA:
Tom Vonier FAIA gave a report on the International AIA region. The main goal of the International AIA region is to help American architects be successful outside America.
A new Chapter in the Middle East has been successfully started. There is also an effort being made to develop an Indian chapter as well.
Richard Anderson AIA, Publication & Records Committee Chair, reported on the new web site. He has also coordinated the AIA Europe web site with AIA Middle East. Richard has also done groundwork for the International Region web site, aiainternational.org.
There was talk that the chapter should have better visibility at trade shows. Clark Manus FAIA, Institute President, informed the chapter that there is a traveling brand kit for trade shows with banners that can be shipped where needed. He also informed the Chapter that there is an AIA National seminar on communication in July; AIA Europe should attend it.
Gregg Brodarick, Assoc. AIA said that he would organize a subcommittee for trade show events.
Vincent Marani AIA reported that AIA Europe is doing well in terms of renewals for 2011. The Chapter has 207 renewals which are more than the same time last year; the 2010 member count us 210. While some AIA Europe members did leave the Chapter to form AIA Middle East, the overall membership numbers for the Chapter remain steady.
Suzanne Marhefka AIA and Tiffany Melancon, Assoc. AIA gave a presentation on the conference in Basel; it will be from 14-16 October 2011. The conference will concentrate on architecture that has been built recently. Visits will include the Novartis campus and the Vitra campus. The extended tour on Monday will feature Ronchamp and the Salt Institute. At Ronchamp there is some controversy because Penzo Piano is building a Closter there and it is being contested by UNESCO.
Yael Kinsky, AIA will chair the Spring 2012 conference in Tel Aviv, Israel. She gave a presentation on the conference. It will center on new architecture in Tel Aviv. She believes that there is not a security threat to the group and insures that Tel Aviv is a very secure city. She will plan a conference extension for people interested in visiting religious places outside Tel Aviv. Thomas Bitnar AIA, 2011 First Vice-President (2012 President) will assist her with the scheduling and budgeting of the conference. This conference should be marketed to a wider audience i.e.: AIA International and AIA National.
James C. Jao AIA made a short presentation on a conference in Beijing. He is offering this conference idea to AIA Europe because of his personal relationship with the Chapter. The AIA Europe Board of Directors and Tom Vonier FAIA (International AIA Director at the Institute) feel the conference should be an International event and is bigger than AIA Europe. No vote was taken.
There will be a future conference in Hamburg organized by Vincent Marani AIA. Additional future venues proposed: Tom Vonier FAIA proposed Lyon, France and Ray Spano AIA proposed Marseille, France.
Steven Miller FAIA told the chapter that he is currently the Fellow Committee Chair for AIA Middle East which conflicts with him being the Fellowship/Honorary Committee Chair for AIA Europe. Steven is stepping down as AIA Europe Fellowship/Honorary Committee Chair. The Board needs to find someone to fill the position.
