Bulgaria: Ancient Places in a Modern World

The conference begins in the capital city of Sofia, the ancient Serdica. Emperor Constantin was known to refer to the city as "Serdica is my Rome".  We will also visit the second largest city, Plovdiv, the ancient Philippopolis, named after Alexander of Macedonia's father. Plovdiv was chosen as the 2019 European Capital of Culture.  The trip to Rila Monastery, one of seven UNESCO protected monuments in Bulgaria, dating back to the 11th century, will open another page in understanding Bulgarian culture and architecture.

The Monday extension will highlight the ancient capital of Veliko Turnovo, a scenic and walkable hill town.  The trip to Veliko Turnovo will take us across the stunning scenery of the beautiful Balkan mountains.
